Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the iPod
OCT 23, 2021, marks one of the most defining moments in Apple History, when the late Steve Jobs introduced the original iPod at a small press event at the Town Hall auditorium at Apple’s former Infinite Loop headquarters.
Job famously pitched the iPod as offering “1,000 songs in your pocket,” when he unveiled the device by pulling it out of his own pocket.
“With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again,” said Jobs, a recipient of The BrandLaureate Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2011.
The combination of its 5GB hard drive and 0.75-inch thickness was impressive at the time. The device also features a two-inch screen, up to 10 hours of battery life, a FireWire port, with its iconic click wheel.
With the iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket, and listen to it wherever you go.
It turned out to be one of the most important products in Apple’s history along with the original iMac, which helped the company become successful again, after it flirted with bankruptcy in the late 90s.
The iPod has since become a niche product for Apple, with the iPod touch being the only remaining model available for purchase after the iPod classic was discontinued in 2014, and the iPod nano and iPod shuffle were discontinued in 2017.
In the last round of Brand Insights on Oct 9, 2020, DrKKJohan, the World President of The BrandLaureate spoke about the Apple Brand Story, on how it became the first tech company in the world to reach two trillion dollars in August 2020.
DrKKJohan said: “Brands must have their own community of faithful customers who respond positively to the Brand. Apple’s innovative and trendsetting products have always created a buzz, and it is able to gather the attention and curiosity of the community through its technology and innovation,
“The range of Apple products started in 1998 with the launch of iMac, which gave a boost to the Mac, followed by iBook. The next wave of transformation began with the iPod which allowed users to download their favourite songs from iTunes and listen to it anywhere and everywhere – thus building a community of loyal fans,” added DrKKJohan.
