TODAY, February 29 is a Leap Day 2020, and Google celebrated the date with an animated doodle featuring hopping bunnies, created by artist Olivia Huynh.
The Google Doodle page said, “Today’s Doodle is jumping for joy on Leap Day, the 29th day of February that only occurs about every four years, to keep our calendars in alignment with the Earth and the Sun.”
This day was preceded by the date in 2016 and will occur next in 2024. “We HOP you have a good one-Happy Leap Day!” it added.
A leap day or leap year occurs every four years, and this particular date is added to those years that are divisible by 4. In case of a leap year, one extra day is added to calendars as that year in particular lasts for 366 days instead of 365.
To explain this phenomenon, the Google Doodle page elaborated, “This is to keep our calendar in sync with the rotation of the Earth around the sun. Without Leap Day, we’d be out of sync by about six hours per year.”
HAPPY LEAP DAY, TODAY!
