Born on March 6, 1937 in Maslennikovo, Russia to a farming family, Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova loved aerospace since she was a child.
She made her first skydive in 1959 at 22 and made more than 90 jumps in the day and night, on land and sea.
Two years later, Tereshkova was accepted into a volunteer cosmonaut program as an accomplished parachutist.
On June 16, 1963, she created history by being the first woman to reach out of space. She made her first and only space flight in the spacecraft Vostok 6 – which completed 48 orbits in 71 hours.
She married fellow cosmonaut Andriyan G. Nikolayev first, had a daughter with him before divorcing and getting married Yuli Shaposhnikoy in 1982.
Tereshkova was an active member in the Supreme Soviet from 1966 until 1991, and was the deputy chair of the Yaroslavl province, as a member of the United Russia party in 2008.
For her amazing feat, she received The BrandLaureate World Record Awards in 2010.
Now aged 83, she remains a sitting member of the Russian parliament and continues to be known for her distinguished career in science and politics.
