Amelia Earhart is the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Today we celebrate the incredible life and accomplishments of aviator, Amelia Earhart, who was born on this day in 1897. She achieved many great accomplishments and paved a way for women in aviation. In 1922, she became the first woman to fly solo above 14,000 feet and also made the first solo, nonstop flight across the United States by a woman. In 1932, Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, a military decoration awarded for “heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.” Her words and actions has paved the way for many women in this generation to step out of their comfort zone and experience life the way we should, in her words: “I believe that a girl should not do what she thinks she should do, but should find out through experience what she wants to do.”
Happy Birthday Amelia Earhart!
