He died on October 11, 2019, in Moscow, aged 85 after a long illness.
The Soviet/Russian cosmonaut, Air Force Major general, writer and artist, was also a recipient of The BrandLaureate Award.
On 18 March 1965, he became the first human to conduct a spacewalk, exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission for 12 minutes and 9 seconds of extra vehicular activity.
Alexei’s life has inspired several films including the documentaries Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back (1994), Schritt ins Unbekannte.
Tributes poured in from across the world on Friday, with Western space agencies and experts praising Leonov’s contribution and admirers bidding him farewell.
