Andrea Meza, 26, from Chihuahua City, finished first ahead of the Brazilian and Peruvian finalists in a flashy televised event, hosted by American actor Mario Lopez and television personality Olivia Culpo.
She is the 69th woman to hold the title.
Sunday night marked Miss Universe competition’s return to television after the pageant was canceled in 2020 for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The event which attracted 73 contestants from all over the world, was held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
Meanwhile, during the national costume portion of the Miss Universe pageant, Miss Myanmar Thuzar Wint Lwin wore an outfit beaded in traditional Burmese patterns and held up a sign that said, “Pray for Myanmar.”
She used the pageant to urge the world to speak out against the military junta, whose security forces have killed hundreds of opponents since it seized power in a Feb 1 coup.
