It is with heavy hearts that, we, at The BrandLaureate bid farewell to YBhg Tan Sri Dr. Devaki Krishnan, recipient of The BrandLaureate Brand Icon Leadership Award 2014 – Most Eminent. Fondly known as the “Grand Dame of Malaysian Indian Politics,” she served as the first Malaysian woman in public office during pre-independence Malaya, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s political history.
Starting her career as a teacher, she went on to become the vice-president of the Malaysian Indian Congress, contributing significantly to the formation of its women’s section. Her influence extended beyond political realms, serving on prestigious boards and councils, including the National Council of Women’s Organisations and the Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association.
Her groundbreaking achievements, which include receiving the Serving Sister of St John Award from Queen Elizabeth, being the first Indian woman to be conferred a Tan Sri title, and receiving the Tokoh Wanita and the Tun Fatimah Gold Medal from the NCWO, epitomize her exceptional contributions.
Today, we remember Tan Sri Dr. Devaki as a pioneer for women in the Malaysian civil service, having fostered positive change in societal perceptions. Her impact on Malaysian society is truly immeasurable, and her memory lives on in the hearts of those she touched. May her soul rest in peace.
