MISS UNIVERSE 2021: Harnaaz Sandhu

Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe in the Israeli city of Eilat early Monday.

Sandhu took the top prize in the Red Sea resort with Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira first runner-up and Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane taking the second runner-up spot.

She was presented the crown by Andrea Meza, former Miss Universe 2020 from Mexico at the event which was live-streamed globally.

The 21-year-old from Punjab, who is also a model and actress, brought home the crown, 21 years after Lara Dutta won the title in 2000.

The 70th edition of the annual pageant was held in Israel for the first time, and has also faced complications from the coronavirus pandemic and some political protests.

When the contestants were asked, “What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today” Harnaaz said:

“The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing, is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let’s talk about more important things that are happening worldwide,

“Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that is why I am standing here today.”
