The 37-year-old Penangite claimed the honor after obtaining the most number of votes — a massive 318,945 votes, in the final round of 10 athletes after the world-wide poll closed at 9pm Malaysian time.

Altogether, 23 past and present athletes representing various sports from all editions of the World Games’ 40-year history were selected for the worldwide poll. The other sports personalities include James Kehoe of Ireland who notched 113,120 votes while powerlifter Larysa Soloviova of Ukraine garnered 80,790 votes. All in all, 1,204,637 votes were cast during the poll.

Nicol was the only Asian athlete who was shortlisted for the award,.

THE BRANDLAUREATE AWARDS

Nicol was also accorded the title โ€œThe World’s Greatest Female Squash Player of All Timeโ€ by The BrandLaureate Book of World Records. The award ceremony and gala dinner were held during the SMEs BestBrands Awards (2018-2019).at Hotel Majestic Kuala Lumpur on March 27, 2019.

During an interview, Nicol said: โ€œIt is such a thrill to win The BrandLaureate Award and I am so excited to be part of this amazing event.โ€ She admitted that her success came with a lot of hard work and sacrifices as she often pushed against her limit.

She thanked DrKKJohan for being an amazing ambassador to aspire more brands to come true and to bring Malaysian sports personalities to a higher level.

QUEEN OF SQUASH

A talented squash player, Nicolโ€™s profound skills and experiences have brought her to become one of the most notable sports icons in the world. Also known as the Queen of Squash, Nicol held the Worldโ€™s No.1 spot for a total of 112 months consecutively. and won a total of 81 Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles from 102 finals.

She spent an unprecedented nine years at the pinnacle of the womenโ€™s squash world rankings between 2006 and 2015, won eight world titles between 2005 to 2014, as well as 81 professional titles.

Due to her incredible success, Nicol was also inducted into the World Squash Federation Hall of Fame 2011 and was declared the 12th Legend of the Sports, before she finally retired in June 2019.
