The BrandLaureate is proud to honor Datuk Lee Chong Wei with the BrandLaureate Book of World Records at The BrandLaureate Awards and gala dinner at Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur on June 27, 2019. The Malaysian Badminton Legend created an air of excitement in the ballroom, packed with 1000 VIP guests and brand champions during the ceremony.

During an interview at the event, Lee, 37, said he is grateful for the awards to celebrate his success, in conjunction with his retirement from the sports of badminton.Lee who was accompanied by his family, feels happy to be invited to the gala dinner, but sad that he has to leave the professional sports after two decades, due to medical reasons.

โ€œToday I feel both happy and sad. Sad is because of my retirementโ€ฆ but more importantly is my health,โ€ said Lee.

On whether he still has the drive to do more for the country after putting down his racquet, Lee said: โ€œSure! Next year is the Olympic year and I have a very important job as Chef-De-Mission at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

โ€œIt is a very important year for me and my team, and it is also my dream to do my best for the country, so that the Malaysian team can get better results. We still have one year to go, and we must do a better job โ€“ and hopefully to win a gold medal.

Lee was ranked World No.1 for many years, spent a whopping 348 weeks, including a 199-week streak from 2008-2012 as World No. 1. He has also won three Olympic medals during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Games.

On his secret of success as a badminton champion, Lee said the most important quality is to have discipline. โ€œBadminton is a skill sport. Firstly is talent, and secondly is to be hard working.โ€

Lee made the country proud by bagging 69 titles throughout his illustrious career, including a staggering 46 titles in the now-defunct Superseries โ€“ the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) top-flight circuit.

Sadly, on 13 June 2019, he announced his retirement from professional badminton after an illustrious 19-year career. Fans will miss his trademark skills such as tight net play and cross-court smash.

Lee, who is also a recipient of The BrandLaureate Grand Master Brand Icon Leadership Award (2012), took the opportunity to thank and congratulate DrKKJohan for hosting the greatest and grandest brands and branding awards in town.

โ€œDrKKJohan is my good friend and I also feel very proud of him. I wish him all the best and I take this opportunity to celebrate our success together with other Malaysians and brand champions.”

Thank you Datuk Lee Chong Wei, you have made the country proud. All the best to you and your future undertakings.
