THREE of The BrandLaureate’s International Brand Personalities were named top athletes of the year at Laureus World Sports Awards 2020 in Germany on Monday.
US gymnast Simone Biles, 22, who won the Sportswoman of Year award for the third time, scooped the award for the second year running.
Biles crushed the women’s individual all-around competition at the Rio Olympics in Brazil in 2016, by winning four gold medals. She also won The BrandLaureate International Brand Personality Award in December 2016.
Meanwhile, Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton were named joint winners as the World Sportsman of the Year after getting an equal share of the votes from fans worldwide.
Both Messi and Hamilton were also the BrandLaureate Legendary Awards winners in November 2017, and in June 2016 respectively.
Messi, 32, became the first footballer to get the award after helping lead Barcelona to the Spanish league title. The Argentine professional footballer and Barcelona captain picked up a record sixth Ballon d’Or in 2019, and also won La Liga for the 10th time in his career.
Meanwhile, Hamilton, who was in attendance at the ceremony in Berlin, Germany, was presented with the award by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The 35-year-old was crowned Formula One world champion for the sixth time in November 2019 and used his acceptance speech to call for more diversity in his sport.
Congratulations to all the BrandLaureate International Brand personalities for your outstanding success and contribution to the sports world!
