NEWLY crowned Singaporean Badminton World Champion Loh Kean Yew arrived home to a hero’s welcome.

The Penang-born Singaporean shuttler made history when he clinched gold at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Spain on 19 December 2021.

He is the first Singaporean to win the title.

Loh, 24, beat Olympic champion and world number one Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, as well as world number three and fellow Dane Anders Antonsen.

The 22nd-ranked Loh stunned India’s world number 14 Srikanth Kidambi 21-15, 22-20 in the men’s singles final.

The 2021 BWF World Championships was held at Palacio de los Deportes Carolina Marรญn in Huelva, Spain from Dec 12-19, 2021.

Meanwhile, former badminton great Lee Chong Wei said the national badminton squad should take Lohโ€™s extraordinary success as motivation.

Although badminton fans described Lohโ€™s achievement as a great blow to the Malaysian badminton camp, the former world No.1 said they should emulate his spirit to continue achieving success in the future.
